1.4429 / 316LN stainless steel (AISI 316LN / X2CrNiMoN17-13-3)

EN 1.4429 (AISI 316LN / X2CrNiMoN17-13-3) is a low-carbon, nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steel developed for applications where standard 316L is strong enough in terms of corrosion resistance, but not always in terms of mechanical strength. The controlled low carbon level supports weldability and helps reduce the risk of sensitization, while nitrogen increases yield and tensile strength and can improve pitting resistance.

In practice, 316LN is frequently specified for pressure equipment and structural parts that combine chloride exposure with higher design stresses. Typical examples include piping systems, flanges and fittings, offshore structures, and machined components where a higher proof strength can reduce wall thickness or improve safety margins. Final properties depend on product form and supply condition (typically solution annealed) and are confirmed by EN 10204 / 3.1 certification.

Forms

1.4429 / 316LN is supplied in several product forms, including round bar, plate/sheet and tube, as well as machined blocks. It is commonly delivered in solution annealed condition to achieve the required corrosion resistance and toughness.

Availability (stock & project supply): round steel 6 – 242 mm and blocks (other forms and dimensions available on request, depending on specification).

Dimensions

Round bar range: 6 – 242 mm

Blocks: available (sizes on request)

Centerless ground shafts

Centerless grinding available on request. This is often specified for precision shafts and components requiring tight diameter tolerances, improved straightness and a controlled surface finish.

Applications

  • Pressure equipment: pressure vessels, piping systems, manifolds and process components where higher proof strength than 316L is beneficial.
  • Offshore & marine: structural parts, clamps, connectors and fasteners exposed to chloride-containing atmospheres (selection depends on design details and corrosion allowance).
  • Chemical & petrochemical: equipment and piping in mildly to moderately corrosive media where 316-type corrosion resistance is suitable, but higher mechanical performance is desired.
  • Machined parts: blocks and round bar for turned, milled and precision components such as shafts, rings, seats and fittings.
  • Cryogenic / low-temperature service: austenitic microstructure provides good toughness at low temperatures (verify project requirements and test conditions on the certificate).
  • 1.4404 / 316L – common 316-type low-carbon stainless steel with very good corrosion resistance and broad availability.
  • 1.4435 – austenitic stainless steel often specified with higher purity / controlled chemistry for demanding corrosion performance.
  • 1.4571 / 316Ti – stabilized 316-type grade used where elevated temperature service or sensitization concerns are relevant.

FAQ – 1.4429 / 316LN

What is the benefit of nitrogen in 316LN?

Nitrogen increases yield and tensile strength without significantly reducing ductility, which is one of the reasons 316LN is used for structural and pressure applications. In many chloride-containing environments, nitrogen can also improve resistance to localized corrosion. The exact benefit depends on the final chemistry, surface condition and operating environment.

Is 1.4429 suitable for welded constructions?

Yes. The low-carbon content supports weldability and helps reduce the risk of sensitization compared to higher-carbon stainless steels. Good welding practice is still essential: correct heat input, suitable filler, proper cleaning and (where required) pickling/passivation. Requirements should follow the relevant welding standard or project code.

How does 316LN compare to 1.4404 / 316L?

1.4429 (316LN) generally provides higher proof strength than 316L while maintaining similar “316-type” corrosion resistance. That can be useful when designs are strength-driven (e.g., pressure ratings or structural loads). Availability and pricing can differ by product form, and the final choice should be made based on both corrosion mechanism and design code.

Can 316LN be supplied as round bar and blocks?

Yes. 1.4429 / 316LN is available as round steel and blocks, making it suitable for machining turned or milled components. For this grade, round bar is commonly supplied in a wide diameter range, and blocks can be provided for parts that require larger cross sections or specific machining strategies.

Do you provide material certificates?

Yes. Material is supplied with EN 10204 / 3.1 certification. The certificate documents heat/lot traceability and includes chemical analysis and mechanical test results for the delivered condition. For pressure equipment projects, the certificate is an important part of compliance documentation.

Is centerless grinding possible for tight tolerances?

Yes. Centerless ground bar can be supplied on request when tight diameter tolerances, improved straightness and consistent surface finish are required. Provide the target diameter, tolerance class, straightness, surface roughness and delivery length at quotation stage.
