EN 1.4742, also known as Sicromal 10, AISI (442) and X10CrAlSi18 (often written as X10CrAlSi 18), is a ferritic heat-resistant stainless steel designed for oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. With its relatively high chromium content, it offers better scaling resistance than lower-alloyed heat-resistant ferritic grades, while remaining a practical choice for furnace and combustion equipment operating in hot air and combustion gases.
A typical advantage of 1.4742 is its resistance in sulphur-bearing hot gases compared with many standard stainless steels, which is why it is used in certain combustion and thermal processing environments. Final suitability always depends on temperature, thermal cycling, atmosphere composition and mechanical loading.

Sheets / plates (hot rolled, finish 1):
Thickness: 3 mm – 20 mm
Width: 1000 / 1250 / 1500 / 2000 mm
Length: 2000 / 2500 / 3000 / 6000 mm
Cutting services: plasma cutting / water-jet cutting / laser cutting / sawn cuttings available.
Centerless grinding available on request. Provide required diameter tolerance and surface finish for quotation (commonly relevant for rollers and precision support components).
Sicromal 10 is used for parts exposed to high-temperature oxidizing atmospheres such as furnace interiors and combustion equipment. Its chromium-aluminium-silicon alloying supports the formation of a stable protective oxide layer, reducing scaling and extending service life in hot air and combustion gases.
1.4742 generally provides improved oxidation resistance compared to 1.4713 due to higher chromium content. However, it is typically less oxidation resistant than 1.4762, which contains even more chromium and is often chosen for more demanding temperature ranges. The best choice depends on temperature, cycling and the furnace atmosphere.
1.4742 is often selected for certain sulphur-bearing gas exposures in high-temperature service, where many standard stainless steels can suffer accelerated attack. Actual resistance depends strongly on gas composition, temperature and condensation risks, so service conditions should be reviewed for critical designs.
Yes, it can be welded and formed with appropriate procedures. Heat input should be controlled to limit distortion and reduce the risk of embrittlement typical for ferritic structures. For critical assemblies, a qualified WPS/PQR and suitable filler selection are recommended.
Yes. Sheets/plates can be supplied cut to parts (plasma, water-jet, laser or sawn cuttings). Round bar can be supplied and, where required, centerless ground on request—please specify tolerances, surface finish and delivery condition.
